The Door that Changes Everything

It was my privilege to preach at the 149th St Alban Pilgrimage on Saturday in the Cathedral service.

I started with a question. How many doors are there in a cathedral? It may seem like an odd question, but doors matter, because every door represents a choice.

When Alban opened his door to Amphibalus, he did something courageous and risky. In Roman Britain, you did not open your door to a hunted priest, and you certainly didn’t invite him in. Yet Alban did. In that simple but courageous act, two strangers became connected through story, faith, and shared humanity and history was changed.

That same truth matters today.

Human trafficking thrives behind closed doors: doors of silence, fear, indifference, and systems that fail to connect. More than 50 million people are trapped in exploitation worldwide, each with a story, each carrying immeasurable worth, each vulnerable to those who see human beings as commodities.

But stories have power. Stories are information with soul.

At STOP THE TRAFFIK, we have spent over twenty years opening doors, between sectors, communities, governments, businesses, and faith groups so we can share intelligence and disrupt trafficking networks. Criminals collaborate at scale; prevention requires us to do the same.

Our greatest legacy will not be buildings, titles or monuments. It will be the doors we opened, the stories we listened to, and the lives changed because we chose connection over fear. So, the question is simple: what door can you open this week?

God of the open door,

Grant us courage like St Alban to welcome others with compassion,

to listen to their stories, and to choose connection over fear.

Open our hearts to those who are suffering,

especially victims of trafficking and exploitation.

Help us to be people who bring hope, justice, and freedom. Amen.
