Anyone for Tennis...?

I’m well aware that some love following sports whilst others are happy for any and every sporting event to pass them by. I stand somewhere in the middle; enjoying the skills and determination of tennis players at Wimbledon, keeping an eye on international cricket, and finding myself getting excited that England might do well in the football World Cup. You never know.
In a world beset by wars and conflict, injustice and exploitation, sports feel a welcome way to play out healthy competition in the context of fair play and integrity of competitors.
Despite the introduction of sporting events in Biblical times and developed significantly by the Persian, Greek and Roman world, I don’t think Jesus and his disciples are recorded as having participated in sports. However, the qualities of cooperation, support for one another, and an attitude of enabling people to fulfil their potential all feature in discipleship and the gospel narratives.
As we enjoy (or avoid) this season of sporting events let’s focus on attitudes and qualities that introduce fun, fair play, and opportunities to celebrate the skills and successes of sportspeople and their teams.
Lord of life,
in all things we may celebrate your love that wins over all,
and grant us grace to win the crown that is imperishable. Amen.
