Mine's a Pint

I shouldn’t be surprised but I’m often taken aback at just how busy St Albans pubs are. Especially at the weekend. Our recent spell of hot weather has made the occasional refreshing drink even more welcome.

I also wasn’t surprised to learn that many of the International Organ Festival competitors found friendship, solace and celebrations convivially shared over some good English beer, or the like.

Those living in dryer and dustier parts of the world appreciate just how important it is to keep hydrated (non-alcoholic, that is), and I’m sure Jesus’s words would have immediately resonated with those listening when he said;

“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” (John 7: 37)

This invitation stands today. Whether in festivals or in normal time, God’s gift of living water keeps us alive in him. Yes, we can enjoy a pint, and yes, we need to drink water to hydrate, and importantly we can come to Jesus, the means by which our soul is quenched, and the parched land of human hearts are brought to life.

Eternal God,

we come to you, the source of life and love.

Fill our empty hearts and quench our thirst,

that we may serve you with joy and gladness all our days. Amen.
