Bound in Unity

Yesterday we celebrated Mothering Sunday, a day when traditionally people would return to their home church, by thinking about our homes: our church home and the home where we live.

In the letter to the Colossians (3:12-17) we read advice for a church community, which could equally apply to our home life. We are encouraged to ‘clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other’.

This is not always easy in the day to day reality of our lives but the letter reminds us that we are not alone. Christ will dwell in our church, home and our own hearts if we invite him. By Christ’s example of a life which completely embodies God’s love, we too learn how to love. It is this love which binds us together in unity, whatever our differences.

Almighty God,

who wills us all to live together in harmony,

have mercy on us, forgive all our sins

and bind us together in unity and love.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
