Friends' Spring Visit

You are cordially invited to join the Friends' Spring Visit which will be to The Charterhouse, Charterhouse Square, London, EC1M 6AN on Tuesday 17th May.

The Charterhouse, formally known as Sutton’s Hospital in Charterhouse, is a former Carthusian monastery in London, to the north of what is now Charterhouse Square, a short walk from Barbican Thameslink and Underground station. The institution possesses a very colourful history and since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the house has served as a private mansion, a boys’ school and an alms house, which it remains to this day and is a registered charity.

The residents of Charterhouse are known collectively as “the Brothers”. (The Brothers, who are in need of financial and social support, are selected from a wide variety of professions, which includes teachers, clergymen, writers and editors, musicians and artists.)

Governors include Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Archiepiscopal Governor is The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend & Right Honourable Justin Welby MA.

Our tour will take place on Tuesday 17th May and will be led by the Brothers of the Charterhouse, starting at 2.15pm and lasting approximately an hour and a half. A preview of the tour and photos of the impressive architecture and surroundings is available on their website www.thecharterhouse.org which is well worth a read.

The tour is scheduled to finish just in time for tea, and for this we shall be walking around the corner to Hotel Malmaison for a (simple) cream tea in their Lounge & Bar.

Of possible interest, please note that it may also be possible to return in order to join a handful of residents in The Chapel for Evening Prayer (BCP, Said) at 5.30pm and more information on this will follow.

The cost of the visit including tea will be £22 per person for Friends, not including transport, and payment should be made in person to Robin Farrar or left in the Church Office for my attention, cheques in favour of The Friends of St Peter’s Church please. To reserve a place contact Robin - robin@robinfarrar.co.uk

Please note that numbers are limited and the offer will close at the end of April.
