Churchyard

St Peter's churchyard offers a tranquil green space close to St Albans' city centre.

Members of the local community and visitors alike appreciate relaxing in and walking through this green oasis in the heart of our city. It is a place rich in history and wildlife interest. It is above all else a sacred space, having been the site of a church for over a thousand years. Today it continues to offer inspiration and a peaceful place for reflection, contemplation and prayer.

The historic churchyard has been restored and revitalised over recent years to create a Living Churchyard, offering a space for reflection and a place where wildlife can flourish. There is the peaceful and welcoming Garden of Hope, with the Hope stone and the Tree of Life sculpture. A pocket wild flower meadow and an apple orchard grafted from Hertfordshire’s heritage fruit stock are taking root. And the most recent addition to the churchyard is a story-telling circle created from a fallen tree.
