St Peter's Church, St Albans

BellringingWelcome to St Peter's Bellringers' area!  The tower at St Peter's has a fine ring of ten bells, with a tenor weighing 24 cwt in E flat. The tower is close to the eastern end of the church. The entrance is on the northern side next to the corridor that runs between the church and the octagonal church hall. There are 50 steps to the Ringing Chamber, which is about 23 feet (7.5m) square and there is seating for about 20 people. For more information about our bells, see our Bells page. For more information about the tower, see the Tower page.

The bellringers come from all walks of life, and range in experience from beginners to Peal-ringing experts. New learners are always welcome, so if you are aged 10-80, why not give it a go. See our Links and Contacts page for contact information.

We ring from 8.50-9.25 on sunday mornings and from 5.50-6.25 before Evensong. Evening ringing is sometimes preceded by a training session, quarter peal or peal. We also ring for services on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Ascension Day, and each year we ring the old year out and the new year in. We practise every Monday from 7:45-9.30pm. Practices cater for a full range of ability from rounds and call changes to standard 8 surprise royal. To view upcoming ringing events, see our Events page, which includes St Peter's Tower Calender.

Our tower along with 19 others make up the St Albans District of the Hertfordshire County Association of Change Ringers (HCACR). St Peters is also a National Ringing Centre (one of about 40) following the allocation of a grant from the Worshipful Company of Founders. An electronic simulator is linked to all ten bells and a computer running Abel software which allows many novel combinations of bells to be rung for teaching purposes. A video camera is available in the ringing chamber for demonstrating handling faults, etc. and there is a webcam linked to a TV in the ringing chamber which can display one of the front bells while it is being rung.

On Sunday 4 April 2010 we rang a peal to celebrate the arrival of our new vicar - see here. Recent peals can be found here.
